Hoops for Haiti was started in March 2009 by Sarah Aubry. A former soccer player, Sarah traveled with a group from Eastview Christian Church in Illinois to Pillatre, Haiti, located on the northern part of the country, not far from the coast. While there, Sarah directed a soccer camp for the children of Pillatre.
Some of the other members then decided to build a basketball court with three basketball hoops, and after the court was completed, Emmanuel Laguerre, who is the director of Haitian Christian Ministries, took the first shot. After Emmanuel took the first shot, he stated, “The people of Haiti would love to learn American basketball.” The rest is history. After Sarah told her husband and former college basketball player, Mark Aubry, she received help from his two cousins, David and Adam Provance, and Hoops for Haiti was created.
In August 2009, Mark was “officially” asked to lead a basketball camp for an estimated 1,000 boys and girls of Pillatre. Because 80 percent of the population of Haiti lives below the poverty line, 54 percent live in what is considered abject poverty. As a result, the kids do not have the equipment necessary to participate in the game of basketball. They do not have shoes to wear, or basketballs to use, or even the correct attire to participate in this basketball camp.
This is where I ask for your help. I am a current senior at Northwest Christian Academy and this program has moved my heart to assist in any way I can. I am from Haitian decent; both my parents and grandparents come from Haiti. Although I do not know what it feels like not being able to play because I don’t have the necessary equipment, I do understand what it feels like not being able to participate in something you love. During my sophomore year, I was diagnosed with a blood disease and had to sit out the whole year from all sports. It was a very difficult time for me; therefore I can understand some of what the children of Pillatre are going through.
I have been in contact with Mark Aubry for a couple of weeks now and he has told me what donations Hoops for Haiti would like for their cause. Here are some of the items:
o New or used basketball shoes, or any shoes in general
o New or used basketballs
o New or used basketball uniforms
o Granola bars
Also, monetary donations are being accepted at
http://hoopsforhaiti.org/donate. In addition, shirts to support this cause will be available to purchase in the NCA school office. They are 10 dollars each and 100% of the proceeds will go to Hoops for Haiti. Please help me support this great cause; as Christians, it is our responsibility to set the example and help others that are in need.
Thank you for your help,
Vanessa Valcour
